St Botolph's Circus – Reduction to One Lane
This week, we opened the temporary pedestrian crossing at the junction. This was originally planned for later in the year, but was brought forward following safety concerns regarding pedestrians accessing the works area.
Unfortunately, due to a number of incidents of drivers ignoring the pedestrian crossing, we have today taken the decision to reduce the highway to a single lane approaching the junction and continuing across the roundabout into Magdalen Street.
The safety of pedestrians and all road users is our highest priority. In recent days, we have observed a number of motorists running red lights at the pedestrian crossing while pedestrians were crossing the road.
We are working with the contractor, traffic management team and Essex Police to explore longer-term solutions while the works continue.
